INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. University of Chicago's Garrett Clasen claimed a national title at day one of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday.

In the morning session prelims, Clasen got off to a roaring start, breaking the school record in the 200-yard IM and posting the top time in the event at 1:47.48.

The standout prelim portended a stellar final later in the evening. Clasen shaved another 1.29 seconds off his school record and won the 200 IM in a time of 1:46.19. The Maroon sophomore beat out the runner-up by 0.6 seconds.

With Clasen's NCAA title, UChicago has now accrued 23 individual NCAA championships since 1989. Maroon swimmers have won four national titles in that time frame.

"I'm extremely happy for Garrett and proud of what he has accomplished," Head Coach Jason Weber said. "Garrett has had to overcome a lot of adversity, not only this year, but throughout his college career, and what a great way to validate all his hard work and everything he has had to overcome with a best time, school record, and a national title! He provided a needed spark for our team and got those relays pumped up to perform at their best to make finals and break school records. Garrett is the ultimate competitor and I know we're all looking forward to see what else he can accomplish at this meet."
