2022 NCAA Men's Swimming – 400-yard Medley Relay (3:11.99)

March 17, 2022
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The University of Chicago men's 400-yard medley relay team won a national championship at day two of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday.

The men's 400-yard medley relay produced a new school record in prelims with a time of 3:14.48.

As the night wound to a close, it was time for the medley relay to shine. The UChicago men closed strong down the stretch with a valiant effort, slicing nearly 2.5 seconds off their prelims mark. Once junior Arthur Kiselnikov touched the wall in a school-record time of 3:11.99, the Maroons had yet another national title to add to their haul. The winning quartet included junior Winston Chen, sophomore Garrett Clasen, Ssengonzi and Kiselnikov.

"Going into this meet, we thought this was a relay we could have a chance to win," Head Coach Jason Weber said. "Garrett, Jesse and Arthur were all among the top swimmers in their respective events and Winston has improved a ton this year in his 100 back. After a prelims relay where all the teams looked a little tired and the separation from first to eighth was only a couple tenths, it was anyone's race to win but we knew we'd have to go much faster.

"We thought a 3:12 could win and that we were also capable of going a 3:12 even after going 3:14 in the morning," he continued. "Winston was a little faster in the finals putting in a good leadoff leg and then Garrett and Jesse both had monster swims to pull us to the front of the pack. Arthur loves to race and has been so clutch for us as a relay anchor so when he dove in, we knew we had a good chance to win. Arthur was able to come through for us again by going his fastest 100 free split ever to put us on top."
