National Player of the Year
2003 Men's Basketball Jostens Trophy
UChicago senior Derek Reich completed his stellar career by receiving the Jostens Trophy in 2003 as the outstanding NCAA Division III men's basketball player of the year.
Created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., the Jostens Trophy honors those who fit the ideal of the well-rounded Division III student-athlete. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess, and community service.
As a senior, he scored 25.4 points per game and grabbed 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range. Those impressive marks also helped Reich earn University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year accolades for an unprecedented fourth-straight year.
A preseason Division III All-American, Reich was named the UAA Player of the Week seven times and was included on the d3hoops.com Team of the Week three times over the course of the year.
Reich ranks as the all-time leading scorer (2,254) and rebounder (934) in UChicago men's basketball history.
