Martinez oversees all aspects of facilities management, day to day operations, athletic fields and grounds, fitness centers and equipment, contractor maintenance, equipment services, and event operations. Martinez plays a central role in planning and executing game day operations for 20 varsity sports, while also guiding capital projects that enhance the student athlete and fan experience, including the resurfacing and design of the Stagg Field track, turf replacement, bleacher upgrades, fitness center improvements, and other major renovations across Athletics and Recreation facilities.
Martinez arrived at UChicago from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Athletic Department, where he served as Manager of Events and Facilities from 2012 to 2015. He previously held roles as Equipment Manager for Athletics and Recreation (2010 to 2012) and Competitive Sport Specialist (2009 to 2010). At UMBC, he was co awarded the “Commitment to Excellence” award by the Division of Student Affairs for his leadership on the Turf Replacement and Track Renovation at UMBC Stadium. He also taught Physical Education courses from 2013 to 2015.
As a student athlete, Martinez played hockey at UMBC, where he was awarded the “Retriever Award,” recognizing a club athlete who exemplifies leadership on and off the playing surface. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History from UMBC and a Master of Science in Sport, Recreation, and Tourism from the University of Illinois.
Outside of work, Martinez enjoys life with his wife and three children. Whether it is camping trips, traveling to new places, or simply cheering on the Maroons together, family time is his favorite way to recharge.
