Maroons Drop Season Finale at Washington

ST. LOUIS -- Dan Burkett threw two of his four touchdown passes to Easton Knott as Washington (Mo.) University defeated the University of Chicago football team 38-20 in the season finale for both teams Saturday at Francis Field.

With the victory, Washington (6-4, 2-1 University Athletic Association) regains possession of the Founders Cup, which has been awarded to the winner of the annual Chicago/Washington series since 1987.

Game Summary

Sparked by a pair of Burkett-to-Knott touchdowns in the first half, the Bears led 17-13 after two quarters.

Chicago (5-5, 0-3 UAA) scored twice in the second period on a 29-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Vincent Cortina (Belmont, Mass./ Belmont) to junior tight end Brandon Meckelberg (Wautoma, Wis./ Wautoma) (pictured) and on a 2-yard plunge by freshman running back Zak Ross-Nash (Allendale, N.J./ Northern Highlands).

The Bears put the game out of reach with a pair of Burkett touchdown passes in the third quarter.

Chicago's final touchdown came on a 34-yard scoring strike from freshman Patrick Ryan (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Bishop Dwenger) to junior wideout Dee Brizzolara (Aurora, Ohio/ Aurora) with 4:39 left in the contest.

In the Record Books

With 90 receiving yards on five catches, Brizzolara became Chicago's modern era career with 2,727.

Statistical Highlights

Burkett completed 20 of 31 attempts for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Knott finished the day with five catches for 103 yards and two scores. Bears running back Chris Castelluccio rushed for 137 yards on 23 carries.

Ross-Nash gained 69 yards on 13 carries for the Maroons.

Cortina was 9-for-23 for 125 yards one touchdown with one interception. Ryan connected on seven of 13 attempts for 118 yards and his first career touchdown pass. He was also intercepted once.

Notables

Washington won the Founders Cup for the 18th time in 25 meetings. Chicago won last year's matchup 13-10 at Stagg Field.

Chicago lost its season finale for only the fourth time in 18 games under Head Coach Dick Maloney.
