Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago football team wrapped up its regular season with a 23-7 loss to Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday.
The Maroons end up 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the UAA. The Bears captured the UAA Championship with a 3-0 mark in conference and 5-5 overall.
Saturday's game was Senior Day for the 15 UChicago seniors, who were recognized at halftime with their families. The Class of 2013 finished their careers with a 22-17 cumulative record to go with their 2010 UAA Championship.
WashU got off to a fast start on its first drive, breaking off several long runs to travel 51 yards for the opening touchdown. Ryan Lubatkin ran the ball from 15 yards out and reached for the right pylon to score. The two-point conversion attempt was stopped by the defense to make the score 6-0.
UChicago turned the ball over on its following two drives on a fumble and an interception to give the Bears prime field position. But WashU missed a pair of field goals from 45 yards and 25 yards to keep the score 6-0.
After preventing two scores, the Maroon offense got going with an 80-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes of clock time at the end of the first quarter. Freshman wide receiver Cole Thoms made his presence felt by catching a pair of passes for 23 yards and 15 yards to move the chains. Quarterback Vincent Cortina tied the game up with a three-yard touchdown toss to tight end Brandon Meckelberg on third-and-goal. Jeff Sauer's extra point gave the hosts a 7-6 lead.
The Bears responded on the subsequent possession with a 42-yard field goal to retake the lead 9-7. With 11:28 remaining in the second quarter, a thunderstorm came through and caused a 90-minute lightning delay.
The visitors were driving deep into Maroons territory, but a tipped pass was intercepted by linebacker Ben Wade interception at UChicago's 12-yard-line with about four minutes left in the quarter. Chicago marched down to the WashU 34, but came up short on fourth down.
With the ball in hand and only one minute on the clock before halftime, the Bears used a 38-yard pass to give themselves a chance to score. Quarterback Eric Daginella found Ryan Lubatkin right next to the pylon to get the touchdown with five seconds remaining. The extra point made the score 16-7 heading into the break.
In the third quarter, WashU dominated time of possession thanks to a 17-play drive that ate up 8:54 off the clock. However, the Maroons came up big with a goal line stand and stuffed a fourth-down quarterback sneak at the one-yard-line.
The only score in the second half came from the Bears early in the fourth quarter. A 50-yard run by John Hagemann brought his team deep into Chicago territory and then finished it with a two-yard touchdown run.
Turnovers proved costly for the Maroons, who were intercepted three times and lost one fumble on the day. WashU's offense racked up 489 yards with a balanced attack of 247 rushing yards and 242 passing yards. UChicago ended up with 267 total yards (206 passing, 61 rushing).
Cortina completed 19 of 35 passes with one touchdown and three interceptions while also rushing for a team-high 29 yards. Quarterback Kevin Shelton was 1-for-2 passing for 14 yards. Meckelberg caught seven passes for 63 yards and one touchdown. Thoms had a career-best day with six catches for 85 yards.
Defensively, Alex Dzierbicki and Ben Wade compiled 10 tackles each. Wade picked off one pass as well. Defensive end Brandon Bolock tallied nine tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack. Other tackle leaders included Mychael Gilliam (nine), Brian Duffy (eight) and Arlin Hill (eight).
