CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Chicago men's tennis team posted dominant performances across the board en route to a 9-0 shutout of Coe College on Saturday.
The No. 6-ranked Maroons improved to 2-0 on the season. The No. 36-ranked Kohawks fell to 0-1.
Coe made things interesting at No. 1 doubles and pushed the sophomore duo of Nicolas Chua and David Liu to the limit. However, the UChicago duo triumphed 9-8. The Maroon duo of freshman Charlie Pei and sophomore Peter Leung won at No. 2 by an 8-3 score, while the pair of junior Sven Kranz and senior Gordon Zhang triumphed 8-0 at No. 3.
With doubles momentum on their side, the Maroons breezed through singles and did not allow more than seven games in any match. Leung picked up the most dominating win at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0. Chua, Pei, sophomore Luke Tsai, Liu and freshman Max Liu also won in straight sets.
Additionally, the two teams played four extra singles and two extra doubles matches. The Maroons won all four singles and one doubles. Kranz, Zhang, sophomore Michael Selin and freshman Jonathan Li picked up victories on the day.
"Today was a really fun and productive day for our team," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We were able to tinker with the format so that everyone was able to play two varsity matches and collect wins for the team. It's always enjoyable as a coach to get everyone in the lineup, but it doesn't happen as much as we'd like. I thought we were a little timid in doubles and that might have been due to it being our first true road match in front of a big crowd. In singles, we flipped the script and were very aggressive and controlled the baseline and the net, which was great to see. We are really looking forward to competing again tomorrow and cleaning up a few areas of our game before heading back to Chicago to host two very good teams."
