UChicago Volleyball Downs Brandeis and Case Western Reserve to Open UAA Play

WALTHAM, Mass. – The No. 14 University of Chicago volleyball team finished Day 1 of the first University Athletic Association Round Robin with a perfect 2-0 record, defeating Brandeis University and Case Western Reserve Saturday.

UChicago (17-2, 2-0) finishes the league weekend with a 11 a.m. CT contest against No. 8 Washington-St. Louis Sunday in Waltham.

UCHICAGO 3, BRANDEIS 1
After faltering in Set 1, 25-23, the Maroons responded with three dominating games, winning 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18.

Senior Sarah Muisenga (12 kills) and junior Anabella Pinton (10 kills) led a balanced UChicago offense that also saw contributions from Madison Pearson (nine kills) and Audra Berg (seven kills).

Sophomore Emma Griffith dished out 32 assists and had 15 digs and three more Maroons had double-digit defensive numbers: Katherine Wilson (18 digs), Anne Marie Stifter (16 digs) and Muisenga (14 digs).

The Maroons competed at the net against a Brandeis team that totaled 18 block assists, with UChicago totaling 10 block assists and two solo blocks, courtesy of Berg.

UChicago's offense was fine-tuned by the fourth and final set, hitting for a match-high .286 with 11 kills and just one error.  At the service line, the Maroons recorded seven aces to the Judges' five, led by three from Wilson and two more from Griffith and Muisenga.

 

UCHICAGO 3, CASE WESTERN RESERVE 0
The Maroons came out of gate with a 25-13 win and never looked back, taking Sets 2 and 3 by scores of 25-21 and 25-22.

Junior Anabella Pinton led the way with 14 kills and senior Sarah Muisenga (12 digs) had 10, with Pinton hitting for a blistering .341 with zero errors. Emma Griffith again eclipsed the 30-assist mark, finishing with 34 to go along with 10 digs and three block assists.

Audra Berg added nine kills and four block assists and Katherine Wilson recorded 18 digs and seven assists in the match, which saw UChicago hit .286 and hold the Spartans (11-8, 0-2) to just a .028 attack percentage.

UChicago's Anne Marie Stifter chipped in 13 digs and five kills.
