CHICAGO – In a matchup that featured a trio of three-set battles, the University of Chicago men's tennis team fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Chicago State University on Monday afternoon.
The Maroons dropped to 2-1 while the NCAA Division I Cougars improved to 3-12.
CSU went up 2-1 after doubles, with UChicago getting a team point from the No. 3 duo of junior Alex Guzhva and senior Alejandro Rodriguez. Singles play was split evenly down the middle at three points for each squad. Three of the matches went a full three sets, with first-year Bradley Yu coming out on top at No. 6 singles (6-4, 3-6, 7-6). Senior Jeremy Yuan got the win at No. 1 (7-6, 6-4) and sophomore Marek Michulka secured a victory at No. 4 (6-0, 6-3).
"This was a tough loss, but it's one we can learn and grow from," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "The effort was good across the board, but we suffered from some inconsistency in the big moments. We're looking forward to getting back to practice tomorrow and continuing to find ways to improve."
