Box Score WHEATON, Ill. – The University of Chicago men's soccer team fell victim to a late strike in the final two minutes, absorbing a 1-0 loss at Wheaton College on Wednesday night.
The No. 9-ranked Maroons dropped to 5-1-1 on the season. The Thunder moved to 4-1.
UChicago provided most of the offensive action at Joe Bean Stadium. The visitors fired off 20 shots in total and eight on goal. First-year Ryan Shea came achingly close to netting the first score of the game 77 minutes in, but his attempt hit the left post. Wheaton also came up with a pair of team saves on shots by sophomore Ryan Yetishefsky at 84:20 and junior Richard Gillespie at 88:40. Yetishefsky's attempt was cleared off the goal line by a sliding Wheaton defender.
Senior goalkeeper Calvin Walters came up clutch in the 35th minute by saving a penalty kick opportunity to keep the game scoreless.
However, the game's only goal came courtesy of Wheaton at 88:22 with a looping volley from the right edge of the box.
The final stats featured a large shot disparity – 20-5 in favor of the Maroons. Corner kicks were even at four apiece. Yetishefsy was responsible for six shots and junior Naz Kabbani fired off four shots.
Walters (3-1-1 record) made two saves with one goal allowed in his 90 minutes.
