Men's Soccer Title Defense Ends In Quarterfinals

CHICAGO – No. 21 University of Chicago men's soccer returned to the pitch after a thrilling penalty kick win on Friday looking to punch their ticket to yet another NCAA semifinal game when they took on the other winners from the previous day in No. 11 St. Olaf. The Maroons grabbed the game's first goal but two unanswered tallies by the Oles ended the home team's hopes of repeating as national champions in a one goal loss.

RESULT – NCAA TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS
No. 11 St. Olaf – 2
No. 21 UChicago – 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • No. 21 University of Chicago (11-3-6) kicked off the scoring for the second straight game, though it took a little bit longer than it did yesterday against No. 10 Calvin. The Maroons broke the scoreless stalemate just before the 33rd minute when Lyndon Hu set up Jadyn Hsieh-Bailey for his third goal of the season. UChicago outshot No. 11 St. Olaf (18-3-3) 9-7 in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Maroons had several chances to go up by two but the next goal in the contest unfortunately came from the Oles. The visitors tied things up with under 28 minutes left to play as each team kept giving all they had left in the tank to advance to the national championship weekend.
  • It looked like UChicago might head into their second straight overtime contest but with two minutes left St. Olaf used a fortunate bounce off a throw in to pull ahead 2-1. The Maroons tried to mount a comeback in what little time was remaining but never got a shot off as they saw their season come to an end in the Elite Eight.
