KENOSHA, Wis. – Fresh off a perfect three game homestand to start their season, No. 22 University of Chicago women's basketball was back on the hardcourt and ready for their first road test of the year against Carthage. The Maroons put in the work to take a lead into halftime before brushing the Firebirds aside with a big third quarter on Saturday in a 17-point win.
FINAL SCORE
No. 22 UChicago – 79
Carthage – 62
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No. 22 University of Chicago (4-0) knew they had to come to play in their first game away from the Ratner Athletic Center this season when they took on a fellow undefeated team in Carthage (3-1). The first quarter did indeed become a proving ground as the Maroons had to a battle a Firebird offense that put up a total of 19 shots in the first ten minutes of the game. However, taking a ton of shots doesn't necessarily translate to success. Carthage made just six of those attempts while UChicago went 5-for-12 to take a two-point lead into the second frame.
- Up 18-16, the Chicago lead only grew in the next quarter as they once again put up 18 compared to just 13 for Carthage. It was the first stanza after halftime where the Maroons really did their damage though. They came out of the locker room and shot 64.7 percent from the field and hit five of their 13 three pointers in the game to put up 31 points, growing their lead to as much as 23.
- The Maroons once again just had to maintain in the fourth quarter to secure the victory but still helped contribute to their cause by hitting all six of their free throw shots they attempted. In fact, they only missed once from the charity stripe and went 16-for-17 overall in that category.
- Marissa Powe had a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and four players scored in double figures, including a game high 20 from Kate Gross, in Chicago's 17-point win.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
- "I am very proud of the way our team competed today. We've been talking all week about not getting beat the same way twice and I thought we adjusted well and struck back after trailing in the first quarter. Everyone who came into the game came in with great energy and stepped up when we needed it. We just need to keep this same momentum going forward." – Senior Sophia North
- "In our first road game of the year, we showed resilience, togetherness, and toughness. We found a way to defend and battle when we needed it most. Our fourth years led us, but it was most exciting to see second year Kate Gross step up in a big way. This is a great road win for our team." – Head coach Maria Williamson
