KALAMAZOO, Mich. – University of Chicago men's basketball headed to Michigan as they continued their six-game road trip with a contest against Kalamazoo College. The Maroons used a late first half run to grab the lead and used their advantage to fend off a Hornets rally in the second period to snap their two-game skid with a four-point win on Wednesday night.
FINAL SCORE
UChicago – 67
Kalamazoo – 63
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half of Wednesday night's contest was a series of runs that saw the lead change hands back and forth throughout the frame. University of Chicago (4-2) grabbed its first lead at 3-2 with a Joe Berry three pointer which kicked off a 12-3 rally that gave the Maroons a seven-point cushion. However, Kalamazoo turned the tables and scored 14 of the next 19 tallies to reclaim a slim advantage. The streakiness of the game continued with UChicago being the benefactors this time around. A 7-1 run to close out the first frame allowed the Maroons to take a six-point lead into halftime.
- Chicago's slim lead wouldn't grow much in the second though as the Hornets stayed with the visiting team thanks to Kalamazoo increasing their shooting percentage by 10 points from 38.5 to 48.4 in the stanza. After slowly chipping away at the Maroons advantage, Kalamazoo took the lead back with 9:38 left to play.
- Neither team would hold more than a one-point lead for the next few minutes before UChicago took back the advantage for good off a Thomas Kurowski three pointer at 6:29. The Maroons defense was then up to the task to keep Kalamazoo at a distance the rest of the way in a 67-63 victory.
