CHICAGO – University of Chicago's top-ranked men's tennis program won its fifth-straight match to begin the 2023 season on Sunday, downing DePauw University at the XS Tennis Complex.
The Maroons defeated the Tigers 8-1 and swept all three bouts in the doubles competition to begin the match. No. 1 doubles pairing Andrei Leonov and Derek Hsieh notched an 8-4 win to lead the way. Arjun Asokumar and Pat Otero dispatched their opponents at No. 2 doubles 8-6 while Jack Wong and Biren Reddy secured an 8-5 result to round out the doubles play.
Asokumar and Hsieh also had their way at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively. Leonov, at the fourth singles slot, defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-0. Otero had to battle at No. 5 singles in a three-set match, but came out victorious by scores of 7-5, 2-6 and 10-8. Jacob Lowen showed well in his match at the final singles slot with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win.
The Maroons will take on No. 12 Denison in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday, Feb. 19 in their final match before ITA Indoor Nationals, which run Feb. 24-26 in St. Peter, Minn.
