GEORGETOWN, Texas – University of Chicago's sixth-ranked men's tennis program got back to its winning ways with a 5-4 victory over 15th-ranked Southwestern University on Friday.
The Maroons won 2-of-3 doubles competitions and split the singles matches 3-3 to come away with a tightly-contested win. Andrei Leonov and Derek Hsieh defeated their opponents 8-4 at the top singles slot. UChicago's second doubles tandem, Patrick Liew and Jack Wong, also secured a win, 8-6, to give the Maroons an advantage heading into the singles matches.
Hsieh outlasted his opponent at No. 1 singles with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 result. Emil Grantcharov, playing No. 2 singles, split the first two sets 6-3, 3-6 before Grantcharov took the deciding third set, 6-0.
Jack Wong earned a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory for UChicago to round out the Maroon winners in the match. The Maroons return from Texas to continue their Midwest slate, taking on Cardinal Stritch on Friday, March 24.
