Women's Basketball Swat Yellowjackets With Big Fourth Frame

CHICAGO – University of Chicago women's basketball returned to action in the middle of a three game homestand looking to snap a five-game losing streak when they took on University of Rochester inside the Ratner Athletic Center. The Maroons saw a first quarter lead slip away but stuck with it and used a dominate final frame to get back into the win column with an eight-point victory over the Yellowjackets on Friday night.

FINAL SCORE
Rochester – 65
UChicago – 73

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (8-5, 1-1 UAA) came out of the gates firing, taking 19 shots in the first ten minutes and saw almost half of them go in as they ended the first quarter up 21-14 against the University of Rochester (5-8, 0-2 UAA). However, things would quickly be thrown in reverse in the second frame.
  • UChicago, a team that has struggled with one bad quarter in each game during their losing streak, endured another one and made just three of their 12 shots to close out the first half. Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets were able to use the slump to their advantage to erase their deficit and grab a one-point lead heading into the break.
  • The Maroons weren't able to gain any ground in the third quarter but stayed right with Rochester due to each team's 33 percent shooting from the field in the frame. Down by two with one stanza left, UChicago said enough was enough and threw their losing streak to the curb.
  • Chicago exploded to begin the fourth and used an 11-2 run to turn a four-point Yellowjackets lead into a five-tally advantage of their own thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Sophia North. That lead would grow to as large as nine as the Maroons pulled ahead and never trailed again for the last eight minutes of the game. A big different in the contest was points off turnover where UChicago doubled up Rochester 16-8 in what would be an eight-point victory to claim their first "W" of UAA play.
