Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Offensive Struggles At #1 NYU

NEW YORK CITY – Riding a three-game win streak, University of Chicago women's basketball headed to the Big Apple to take on top ranked New York University. The Maroons tried to repeat history after knocking them off last season but were unable to get their offense going in a 25-point loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • (RV) University of Chicago (10-6, 3-2 UAA) put together a very competitive first quarter against top ranked NYU (16-0, 5-0 UAA) even with shooting just 29.4 percent from the field. What saved them was their four shots made from behind the three-point line. Two came from both Ellie Gross and Sophia North, which allowed them to enter the second quarter down by just two after trailing by nine following a 14-5 run by the Violets to start the game.
  • Unfortunately, the deep range attack wouldn't be something the Maroons could rely on moving forward. They went just 1-for-14 in the final three quarters, including missing all seven shots they took from behind the arc in the 10 minutes before halftime. UChicago got outscored 17-8 in the frame, digging them a hole to get out of in the final 20 minutes of the game.
  • Down by 11 to begin the second half, the Maroons rebounded with their best offensive frame of the contest with 15 points but still shot just 33.3 percent. NYU shot even worse but still managed to add two points to their lead.
  • Only two shots fell for the Maroons in the final stanza leading to a game low five points to close out the contest. The Violets lead got as high at 27 points towards the tail end of the contest before settling down to 25 at the final buzzer in UChicago's 67-42 loss.
