Men's Basketball Uses Strong First Half To Get Past Tartans

CHICAGO – University of Chicago men's basketball welcomed both local healthcare workers and the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon to the Ratner Athletic Center for Full Court Care Day on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons built up a large first half lead and were able to fend off a second half Tartans comeback as they walk away with the 84-75 win.

FINAL SCORE
Carnegie Mellon – 75
UChicago – 84

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 7-4 early in the first half, University of Chicago (12-6, 4-3 UAA) woke up from its brief offensive slumber by rattling off a 10-0 run to turn a three-point Carnegie Mellon (11-7, 3-4 UAA) lead into a seven-point deficit for the visitors. The momentum swing allowed the Maroons to take control of the game and saw the lead leave their possession just once in the 14:39 left in the first frame.
  • It was the second half where that lead would come in handy. A 12-point UC advantage was all but erased within the first ten minutes and CMU would go up by four with just under seven left to go in the contest.
  • However, Thomas Kurowski and Joe Berry put the team on their backs and quickly turned the tables on the Tartans. The duo had a combined 24 points in the half and led all scorers in the game with 25 and 23 tallies respectively. The Maroons outscored CMU 17-10 down the stretch to secure a nine point victory at home.
