HOW IT HAPPENED
- University of Chicago (6-3, 6-2 MWC) started strong, as it took less than 3 minutes for senior running back Kyle James to find the endzone on a 7-yard scamper, and the Maroons led 7-0 early in the first quarter. Grinnell (2-7, 2-6 MWC) would respond, though, as the Pioneers took advantage of great field position after a short UChicago punt. The visitors found paydirt on a 7-yard run, but junior Mark Gorbatenko blocked the extra point to keep the Maroons ahead 7-6. Following Gorbatekno's block, UChicago took complete control of the contest and would go on to score the game's next 35 points. With 3 minutes remaining in the opening frame, Gouldin delivered a 20-yard touchdown strike to senior wideout Colman Smith to make it 14-6. Then, following graduate student Braedon Junker's forced and recovered fumble at the Pioneers' 32-yard-line, James took a short screen pass from Gouldin and sashayed 26 yards to the house. The two scores came 2:15 apart and staked the Maroons out to a 21-6 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
- In the second quarter, Gouldin and the offense continued to percolate. Graduate student Mozes Mooney snagged his team-leading 9th touchdown catch of the year on a beautiful ball from Gouldin to make the score 28-6 UChicago with 12:52 remaining in the first half. Later in the stanza, senior receivers Diego Solis and Jayden Lucian both hauled in Gouldin dimes for touchdowns of 39 and 25 yards respectively. At halftime, the Maroons led 42-6, with Gouldin's career-high 5 touchdown passes scattered among 5 different recipients.
- Neither team scored in the second half, due in large part to the efforts of the UChicago defense. Senior linebacker Aidan Cappellino led the charge with a team-best 9 tackles, while Gorbatenko chipped in with 1.5 sacks to go along with his blocked extra point in the first quarter. Additionally, the Maroons managed 3 turnovers in the game's final 30 minutes, with sophomore Houston Weathers and senior Jake Horowitz recovering fumbles, and sophomore Jack Zhang notching his first career interception. Between Gouldin's first-half heroics and the defense holding Grinnell to just 203 total yards, UChicago surged to a 42-6 victory, increasing their winning streak to 4 games.
