Box Score 3 University of Chicago baseball kicked off their 2024 season with a three-game tilt against the Staggs of Claremont-Mudd-Scripts on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The Maroons shook off the rust from a long offseason and came away with some positives but allowed too many big innings to the home team to secure a win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game One
- University of Chicago (0-3) got off to a good start to open the season and scored their first runs of the year off an Erik Rindner double in the third to put the Maroons up 2-0. However, those would be the only baserunners that they'd push across in what ended up being a shortened game. Claremont-Mudd-Scripts (3-0) would go on to grab those two tallies back and add a pair of their own in their half of the third. They'd go on to add seven more runs to the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings during a 12-2 seven inning UChicago loss.
- Game Two
- The Maroons never led in the middle game of the series as the Staggs added a run to the scoreboard in four out of the first five frames. Down 4-0, UChicago's Kason Pelz held the home team scoreless in the sixth but they'd go on to grab seven more runs in the next two innings. The Maroons got their first run of the game in the top of the eighth on a Jack Goldstein RBI single, but it wasn't enough to prevent an 11-1 eight inning defeat.
- Game Three
- The final game of the series was more of a pitcher dual early on than anything else. CMS grabbed two runs in the third and the Maroons added one of their own off a Staggs error in the sixth, but the game would still be within reach of Chicago's grasp when it went into the seventh at 2-1. However, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripts bats woke up again and added four runs late to complete the sweep via a 6-1 score.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
- These three games served as the Maroons first ever meetings against the Staggs.
- Due to construction at CMS's home field, game one was played at La Verne University in La Verne, Calif. while games two and three took place at Long Beach City College in Long Beach, Calif.
