Softball Splits To Begin Florida Stint

WINTER HAVEN, Fla – University of Chicago softball kicked off their annual Florida spring break trip on Saturday with contests against Babson and Swarthmore. The Maroons grabbed their first win of the week behind a stellar pitching performance against the Beavers but had to split the day after the Garnet's bats took over in the second contest of the afternoon.

RESULTS
*NINE INNINGS*
UChicago – 1
Babson – 0

*FIVE INNINGS*
Swarthmore – 12
UChicago – 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. Babson
    • University of Chicago's (4-2) spring break trip started off with a good old-fashioned pitcher dual. Both UChicago and Babson (1-5) kept each other off the board for eight straight innings with Maroons starter Paige Heffke silencing the Beavers bats with six strikeouts.
    • The Maroons managed just four hits in the contest in comparison to Babson's six, but none was bigger than the base knock from Madeline Murphy in the top of the ninth. Her single down the right field line drove in Natalie Antin for what would be the winning run in a 1-0 marathon victory.
  • vs. Swarthmore
    • The Chicago bats were quiet again in the second game of the day but unfortunately their opponent had plenty of life in theirs. Swarthmore (2-0) put together a ten-hit performance and plated 12 runs in the contest starting with five in the top of the first.
    • The Maroons were only able to grab one hit in the contest which was a single that came off the bat of Mia Bocian to lead off in the bottom of the second. UChicago was also able to get on the basepaths with three walks but none would cross home plate in a 12-0 five inning defeat.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will take Sunday off before heading back into action on Monday. They'll take on Hamline at 11:30 am eastern before facing off against St. Norbert College at 1:45 pm eastern in Clermont, Fla.
