CLERMONT, Fla. – University of Chicago began day two of their spring break trip looking to improve on their 1-1 record after play on Saturday. The Maroons were able to move a game above .500 in Florida with a 5-1 win over Hamline but a late St. Norbert's rally dealt them the defeat on another 1-1 day in the Sunshine State.
RESULTS
UChicago – 5
Hamline – 1
St. Norbert – 4
UChicago – 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- vs. Hamline
- University of Chicago (5-3) got their second day of play down in Florida started off right against Hamline (4-2). The Maroons plated their first run of the day in the top of the first and they were off to the races from there.
- The Pipers tied up the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third but UChicago never let them take the lead. Two Chicago runners crossed home in the fourth, including the winning run from Nicole Wong who stole home.
- UC added an insurance tally in both the fifth and seventh which allowed the Maroons pitching staff to take over from there. Delaney Romanchick allowed just one run on five hits while Alana Kimball came in and got the two inning save in their 5-1 win.
- vs. St. Norbert
- Chicago got off to a hot start after St. Norbert (1-3) plated a run in the top of the first. The Maroons responded in kind with three runs in their half of the same frame highlighted by a Mia Bocian double to center and she'd later steal home to make it 3-1 UChicago.
- Unfortunately, the Maroon bats went silent from that point on. The Green Knights overcame striking out over a dozen times at the hands of starter Paige Heffke and got one back in the third before scoring two more in their last at-bats to take the 4-3 lead.
- UC had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but a runner was left stranded in scoring position in a one run loss to SNC.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
- The Maroons are now 2-0 against Hamline and took them on for the first time in a decade on Monday morning. As for St. Norbert, that all-time series is now tied 1-1 after facing off against each other in back-to-back seasons.
