Softball Splits With Calvin In Michigan

KENTWOOD, Mich. – University of Chicago softball headed out on the road yet again and traveled to Michigan to take on Calvin outside of Grand Rapids. The Maroons couldn't contain the Knights bats in game one but were able to silence them in the back half of the doubleheader to split with Calvin on Friday.

RESULTS
UChicago – 5
Calvin – 10

UChicago – 1
Calvin – 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • University of Chicago softball (12-6) got off to a rough start in the first game of the day against Calvin (13-4) and were down 4-0 after three innings. The Maroons had some fight in them as usual though and tired to rally when they cut the Knights lead in half with two fourth inning runs.
    • UChicago would add another pair the very next inning to tie the game when Ava Sinai was hit by a pitch and Mia Bocian singled in another but they'd never take the lead.
    • Calvin would follow up with six runs in their half of the fifth which put the game out of reach for the Maroons. The visitors added one more run in the seventh off a Audrey Hui single but that was as close as they'd get in a five run defeat.
  • Game Two
    • The second contest of the afternoon featured the Maroons pitcher trying to do their best impression of a fellow teammate. Nicole Wong saw what Paige Heffke did to start the week and attempted to go for a no hitter of her own. While she didn't quite accomplish that feat, Wong did throw a complete game shutout and only gave up two hits in a 1-0 win.
    • That lone run that allowed the Maroons to come back to Chicago on a high note came off the bat of Nicole Antin in the top of the first inning when she singled up the middle to plate Madeline Murphy who led off the inning with a double to left.
    • Though they only netted one run, the Maroons still garnered six base knocks in their 12th win of the year.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will finally hit the friendly turf of the Stagg Grass Fields when they host a team for the first time this season at home. They'll take on local foe Wheaton on Saturday, April 6th beginning at 1:00 pm.
