Softball Takes One From Thunder To Open Home Slate

CHICAGO – University of Chicago softball opened up their 2024 home slate by welcoming Wheaton to the Stagg Grass Fields for a two-game series on Saturday. The Maroons came away victorious in a thrilling pitchers duel to start things off but couldn't silence the Thunder in a game two slugfest loss.

RESULTS
Wheaton – 0
UChicago – 1

Wheaton – 11
UChicago – 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • An excellent pitcher's duel took place in game one between University of Chicago (13-8) and Wheaton (11-7). Both starters went the distance and scattered a combined eight hits over the course of the extra inning contest.
    • Paige Heffke only allowed five base runners in total and struck out eight through the same amount of shutout innings.
    • Thankfully, the Maroons were able to secure the win for her in the bottom of the first frame of extras. After the first two Maroons failed to reach, Madeline Murphy singled and advanced to second via an error by the Thunder's left fielder. Natalie Antin was the next batter up and got one to get down in right to score Murphy and walk it off in a 1-0 winner.
  • Game Two
    • Game two couldn't fall under the same classification as the first contest of the afternoon. 16 runners crossed home plate but unfortunately for UChicago, most of them were wearing Wheaton colors.
    • The Thunder scored at least one run in each inning and added seven tallies to the scoreboard over the first three frames. Their 14 hits helped contribute to their offensive attack but only eight of their 11 runs were earned due to three Maroon errors.
    • UChicago was still able to push five runs across and both Mia Bocian and Ava Sinai each had two RBIs as they split the day with Wheaton.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will continue their four game homestand when they welcome UW-Whitewater on Wednesday. Game one against the Warhawks is scheduled for 2:30 pm start.
