Bats Provide Firepower For Baseball's Win Over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – After dropping two contests to their Midwest Conference foe last week, University of Chicago baseball entered Wednesday with revenge on their mind. The Maroons offense provided the firepower and a bullpen day for the pitchers kept Beloit at bay as UChicago grabbed their sixth MWC win of the season behind an 11-9 victory over the Buccaneers.

RESULT
UChicago – 11
Beloit – 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (7-15, 6-2 MWC) was the first to get on the board in Wednesday afternoon's game with a three run second inning. Brian Cordero started things off a with single through the left side to score Jonathan Zeevi before Braden Jirovec homered to drive in two more. Beloit (16-7, 9-3 MWC) tied things up in the bottom half of the same frame, but more was to come from the Maroons offense.
  • Another three-run stanza followed the very next inning with Jack Goldstein singling in a run before Zeevi reached on an error to plate Devan Johnson. Cordero then got his second ribbie of the game with another single to left which made it 6-3 Maroons.
  • The Buccaneers wouldn't make it easy for UChicago though. They'd take the lead with six runs between the fourth and fifth innings but the Maroon pitchers silenced them the rest of the way and let the bats go to work.
  • A Goldstein homer and a Jirovec single in the sixth allowed UC to tie the contest but it was the eighth where UChicago put the game away. A Jirovec sac fly drove in his fourth RBI of the day and Michael Gladden also put together a sacrifice at bat to give the Maroons an insurance run in their 11-9 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will be back at J. Kyle Anderson Field this weekend when they host Lawrence for a three-game set. Games one and two are scheduled for Saturday, April 13th starting at 12:00 pm.
