ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Top seeded University of Chicago had a chance to exact some revenge and grab some hardware at the same time when they took on second seed Case Western Reserve in the UAA Tournament finals. The Maroons got down early but stormed back to earn the conference title and an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
RESULT
No. 2 Case Western Reserve – 3
No. 1 UChicago – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The match didn't start off the way that University of Chicago (19-1) would have wanted it to and fell in two of the three games in the doubles portion of the day. Thankfully, Asokumar and Wong were there to salvage a point and give the Maroons a better shot at the comeback in the second half of the contest.
- With second seeded Case Western Reserve (14-5) up 2-1, and with a win against UChicago already under their belts this season, the Spartans went up 3-1 with a sixth singles win before the rally started. The Maroons proceeded to win the next four straight matches, including battles that required extra points from Kelley and Hsieh at five and two respectively along with a third set tiebreak from Grantcharov, to secure their second UAA title in three years.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
"An amazing effort by the men today to beat Case Western. It took all of us coming together and playing as hard as we could, and we didn't stop believing in ourselves. Amazing effort all season long by our seniors and the example they gave to our players on and off the court. A team cannot win a championship without the full support others around them so thank you to the administration, our ATC Mary, Coach Tee, our alumni, and our parents." – Head coach Matt Brisotti
