ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Championship Sunday had arrived and presented a chance to University of Chicago women's tennis a shot at winning their third straight UAA championship. While it definitely wasn't easy, the Maroons were victorious in the title deciding match and completed the threepeat with a 5-4 victory over Emory.
RESULT
No. 2 seed Emory – 4
No. 1 seed UChicago – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Things got off to a positive start for top seeded University of Chicago (18-1) as they came away with victories in two of the three pairs matches against second seed Emory (14-4). Guo and Sylwia Mikos had a relatively easy path to their 8-2 win, but Lin and Oliwia Mikos had to battle and won their point in a 7-5 tiebreak.
- Things were a little more dicey in singles action though. The Eagles won the first three points to go up 4-2 and needed just one more game to go their way to claim the UAA crown. However, the Maroons refused to back down. The comeback began with Lin's number one singles match victory in three sets and was followed by another three-set win from Guo in the sixth spot. The match, the conference championship, and the automatic bid all came down to Pedersen in the fifth singles match where she came away victorious in a third set that had to go to extra points for the decision. A 7-5 final score gave the title to the Maroons for the third straight year and punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
"Honestly, I've never been a part of a match like this and I'm still unsure of how we were able to pull it out. To lose all six first sets and then win all of the three-set matches is incredibly difficult but is a testament to our team's collective grit. Doubles was key as our top two teams staked us a lead. Shianna and Sylwia played lights out while Oliwia and Rena were down a break at 6-7 and played gutsy tennis to clinch the lead. Rena and Shianna played incredibly tough at the end of singles to set up Brooke's heroics, where she saved two championship points at 4-5 in the third set before breaking at love to clinch the victory. A very special thank you to Coach Brisotti, Mary Wisniewski, the UAA staff, as well as the parents who cheered us on." – Head coach Jay Tee
