No. 6 University of Chicago men's tennis pulled double duty over the weekend and took on both No. 13 Gustavus Adolphus and NCAA D-II foe Purdue Northwest. The Maroons had a thrilling battle against the Gusties on Saturday before easily putting away the Pride to close out the weekend with a 2-0 record.
RESULTS
No. 13 Gustavus Adolphus – 2
No. 6 UChicago – 7
Purdue Northwest – 0
No. 6 UChicago – 9
HOW IT HAPPENED
- vs. No. 13 Gustavus Adolphus
- No. 6 University of Chicago (14-1) had to fight for the two points they earned in doubles play as No. 13 Gustavus Adolphus took them to tiebreaks in both the first and second spot. The Maroons came away victorious in both but dropped a point to the Gusties in the third slot.
- However, UChicago would cruise to victory behind their performance in solo play. They only dropped one match, and though GACÂ went down swinging in a second spot battle that Derek Hsieh eventually took in three sets, the rest were relatively easy victories in their 7-2 match win.
- vs. Purdue Northwest
- The Maroons took on Purdue Northwest on Sunday and breezed by their NCAA D-II foe in doubles with wins of 8-3, 8-4, and 8-1 to go up 3-0 in the match.
- Singles was almost a carbon copy of the first part of the contest as the Pride were no match for UChicago. The closest PNW got to winning a set was the 7-5 loss that Jack Wong delivered to them in number six singles during a 9-0 shutout to go perfect on the weekend.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will be back in action when they take on No. 7 WashU in St. Louis on Saturday. First serve in their first UAA competition of the year is slated for 12:00 pm.
