CHICAGO – It's hard to beat a team once in a season yet alone two times but the task put in front of No. 2 University of Chicago men's tennis was to take down No. 12 WashU for the third time this season. The Maroons were up to it though and turned in their biggest win over the Bears in 2024 to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
RESULT
No. 12 WashU – 0
No. 2 UChicago – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No. 2 University of Chicago (21-1) had already taken down No. 12 WashU (13-11) by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 over the past couple of weeks but their NCAA third round matchup was their most impressive victory over the Bears in the three contests. The Maroons started the clean sweep by taking all three doubles matches, including a top spot victory from Leonov and Otero by the score of 8-2. WashU got close in the other two matches but UChicago still took them with plenty of breathing room with results of 8-5 and 8-6.
- Up 3-0 and needing just two games to clinch, the middle slots in the singles lineup took care of business for the home team. Asokumar got the Maroons their fourth point while Sher put a bow on the action in the Windy City as both turned in identical 6-4, 6-3 results to punch the team's ticket to the quarterfinals.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will have to wait a little over a week to continue their trek to what they hope is a second team national championship. They'll pick up play again in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 21
st in St. Louis, Mo. against an opponent that has yet to be determined.
