APPLETON, Wis. – With a win yesterday afternoon, University of Chicago baseball got a second chance at taking home the Midwest Conference tournament crown on Saturday but would need to win three ballgames in a row to do so. The Maroons took down regular season champ Lawrence in game one but couldn't pull out a second win on the day in a 2-1 loss to Beloit.
RESULTS
UChicago – 9
Lawrence – 7
Beloit – 2
UChicago – 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game One
- University of Chicago (19-24, 16-8 MWC) started what they hoped would become a marathon day with Midwest Conference regular season champion and host Lawrence (31-11, 20-3 MWC) with a 9:00 am first pitch. Needing to win to stay alive, the Maroons put up four runs in the first two innings but were unfortunately matched by the Vikings in the bottom half of those frames.
- Back and forth the two teams went before Lawrence took their first lead of the morning with a run in the sixth. Down 7-6, UChicago rallied in the eighth to score three runs off a Braden Jirovec double and a William DeForest ground out to short to make it 9-7 good guys.
- Grant Tenuta and Phil Hogan combined to keep the Vikings saddled with a two-run deficit and picked up the win and save respectfully after 3.2 innings of scoreless relief in UChicago's first win of the day.
- Game Two
- With one victory already in the bag, the Maroons would need to register two more to take home the MWC crown. Beloit (24-15, 14-10 MWC) was there waiting for them in a championship round where the two squads battled in an extremely close contest.
- The Buccaneers got on the board with a run in the second off a single to left and added another after an infield error by UChicago in the fifth. However, the fifth would also be where the Maroons got their first tally and cut their deficit in half with a Jack Goldstein single to right centerfield.
- The Maroons pitching was solid the rest of the way, but they left four stranded on base in the last three innings, including with the bases loaded in the seventh as UChicago saw their season come to a close with a 2-1 loss to Beloit.
