CHICAGO – University of Chicago baseball opened up the last series of the regular season with a doubleheader against Cornell. The Maroons locked down game one with some early offense but a lack of production in the second contest made them settle for a split with the Rams on Saturday.
RESULTS
Cornell – 2
UChicago – 10
Cornell – 4
UChicago – 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game One
- University of Chicago (17-21, 16-7 MWC) was in complete control from their first at bats during game one against Cornell (23-15, 12-11 MWC). The Maroons scored four runs in the top of the first with the biggest shot coming when Jackson Slipock cleared the bases with a three RBI double.
- UChicago added another in the third before plating five in the seventh. Two sac fly at bats from Michael Gladden and Jack Sharp plated two before a pair came in off a Jonathan Zeevi double and the scoring was rounded out by a Braden Jirovec single through the right side.
- John Butka earned his third win of the season behind five innings of one run ball while David Flanagan came on in relief with four innings of his own while only allowing a single Rams tally in the 10-2 win.
- Game Two
- Unfortunately, the bats wouldn't be so active in the second game of the afternoon. While the Maroons scored runs in the sixth and the ninth, none of them would come with RBIs due to three Ram errors throughout the contest.
- Meanwhile, Cornell scored one in the second and fifth before getting two insurance runs in the ninth to secure the two-run victory.
- The Maroons pitching was still solid though with Hayden Leiderman leading the charge with four innings of one run ball. Carter Kelsey also had a scoreless appearance in 1.1 innings of relief.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
