CHICAGO – University of Chicago volleyball started the 2024 Gargoyle Classic hot, winning both of their matches on Saturday. The Maroons have now recorded their best start since 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- vs William Smith College
- In a back-and-forth game, UChciago started out the match with a 2-0 set lead heading into the third. Only losing the third set by three points, the Maroons held on to closeout the tough battle.
- UChicago and William Smith tied the game a record 21 times. Therefore, both teams only took a lead a total seven times in all four sets.
- Thalita Marangon led the Maroons with 15 serves and 14 digs. Amelia Gibbs recorded her second double-digit kill game with 15. To close out the top three, Keeley Kandziora slammed seven kills.
- Vs Mount St. Joseph
- The Lions, who are also receiving votes, battled out the four set match with the Maroons in a game that also saw 21 ties.
- UChicago came out with a strong defensive showing, recording 83 digs to MSJ's 71. Kennedy Cheung led all teams with 20.
- Gibbs lead the Maroons with 12 kills and a team-high five blocks. Kandziora and Diya Mishra finished with 11 each. UChicago out scored the Lions by more than 20 total points.
WHO'S ON DECK
Next up the Maroons will finish the 2024 Gargoyle Classic tomorrow, Sept. 7 at 1:30 pm. They'll face #17 Millikin University as their first ranked opponent of the season.
