CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's basketball team faced a formidable challenge against the nation's top-ranked team, No. 1 NYU, on Friday evening at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. Despite a strong defensive effort and key scoring surges, the Maroons fell 76-49 to the unbeaten Violets (17-0, 6-0 UAA).
UChicago (12-5, 2-4 UAA) put together competitive stretches in the second and third quarters, but NYU's efficiency in the paint and defensive pressure ultimately proved the difference.
Slow Start, Resilient Response
NYU jumped out to an early lead, utilizing a fast-paced offense to take a 27-10 advantage after the first quarter. The Maroons, however, responded in the second quarter with a more aggressive approach. Sophia North connected on two three-pointers, and Bella Alfaro added a jumper to help UChicago find its rhythm. A defensive stop followed by a transition layup from Alexis Clark cut the deficit, and the Maroons played NYU nearly even in the period, trailing 43-24 at halftime.
Third-Quarter Push
UChicago continued to fight in the third quarter, with North hitting another deep three to energize the home crowd. The Maroons held NYU scoreless for nearly three minutes midway through the quarter, with Kasi Samuda and Kate Gross stepping up on the defensive end. However, the Violets countered with timely shooting to maintain control, extending their lead heading into the final period.
Key Performances
North led UChicago with 14 points, knocking down four three-pointers, while Alfaro added 10 points and two rebounds. Samuda was active on both ends, finishing with six rebounds and a steal. Bri Simpson and Clark provided key minutes off the bench, each contributing to defensive stops and transition opportunities.
Despite the final score, UChicago showcased stretches of strong play against one of the nation's elite teams. The Maroons will aim to bounce back in their next UAA matchup at home against Brandeis on Sunday.
