Maroons get Thrilling Overtime Win over Athenas

CLAREMONT, Cali. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team extended their winning streak to 10-1 with a hard-fought victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a thrilling overtime battle during their trip to Claremont, CA. After a buzzer-beater from Sophia North to send the game into overtime, the Maroons pulled out the win with all the momentum on their side.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a tense contest from start to finish, with the teams trading momentum throughout. The Maroons were off to a hot start in the first quarter, shooting 69.2% from the field (9-13) to take a 22-15 lead. However, the second quarter saw a dramatic dip in offense, as UChicago managed only 5 points while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps closed the gap to 27-26 at halftime.
  • Despite the second-quarter struggles, UChicago came out in the third quarter with renewed focus. The Maroons were led by standout performances from Bella Alfaro and Sophia North, who contributed a combined 34 points on the night. Alfaro's sharp shooting, particularly from beyond the arc (4-8), kept UChicago ahead, while North's 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists provided a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Kate Gross was a force in the paint, grabbing 11 rebounds, while the team's defense helped limit Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to just 30% shooting in the first three quarters.
  • The overtime period saw UChicago rise to the occasion. With clutch shooting from Alfaro and timely free throws from Workman and North, the Maroons outscored Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 13-5 in the extra period to secure the victory. UChicago finished the game shooting 42.3% from the field (22-52), 45% from three (9-20), and 65.2% from the free-throw line (15-23). The Maroons also dominated in second-chance points (19) and points in the paint (24).
