#19 Men's Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak to 11 with 1-1 Draw at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The 19th-ranked University of Chicago men's soccer team brought home a 1-1 draw at Carnegie Mellon to extend its unbeaten streak to 11 consecutive games.

The Tartans opened the game quickly with several shots early in the contest, including an excellent chance on a header from the penalty shot that Ali Alamery turned away in a sprawling effort just over four minutes in.

In the 14th minute, the Maroons would strike first on an absolute banger of a goal from Edward Wu. Wu beat his defender down the sideline on a great one-two with Max Weene, and following three touches, he ripped a strike to the far post from 25 yards out, beating the keeper with a kiss off the post for the highlight goal of the season so far.

David Schuster had a great chance to double their lead in the 37th minute when a bouncing ball found his foot at the penalty spot, but the Carnegie Mellon keeper made a great stop to keep the score level at one.

Carnegie Mellon would outshoot UChicago 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes, but the Maroons would take their 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

In the 60th minute, the Tartans would level the score at one after a costly foul gave them a chance at the spot. The chance was the first penalty kick allowed by the stout University of Chicago defense this season.

Wu almost had his second hero moment of the game in the 74th minute when he found the head of Sean Cooke in the box off a free kick, but the Tartan keeper made a great save on the powerful header to keep the score level at one.

Wu led the team with four shots, and Alamery made two saves in the draw.

With the draw, the Maroons move to 7-1-4 on the season and 1-0-1 in UAA play. The UChicago men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, October 15, as they travel to North Park for their final non-conference match of the season.
