PITTSBURGH, Penn. -- The 6th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team scored two late goals in the final 20 minutes to defeat UAA rival, No. 16 Carnegie Mellon. The Maroons extended their record to 11-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
In the Maroons' trip to Pittsburgh, both teams struggled to find the back of the net. At the end of the first half, both teams had only combined for six shots, but no goals had been scored.
Early in the second half, the Tartans struck first with a goal in the 61st minute. The pressure mounted for the Maroons, who had managed only two shots since halftime.
Two minutes after the goal, the Maroons had a shot to tie the game as a yellow card was handed to CMU. On the free kick, freshman
Kate Bruntlett took a strike to the top left of the goal, but the Tartan goalie was there for the save.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, Chicago needed to find a way to score. Possession went back and forth between the two teams as the ball barely left the midfield.
Layne Kohler played a ball to the box, and
Kamiryn Braxton Grimes collided with the goalie to give Chicago a penalty kick.
Mary Stuart Kerrigan was chosen to take the kick and sent it right down the middle to put the Maroons on the board. The goal was Kerrigan's third penalty kick goal in two games.
The Maroons carried all the momentum, and within five minutes of Chicago's first goal, they found the net again.
Indira Naylor created space from the defense as
Kamiryn Braxton Grimes found
Jamie Nguyen who sent a cross in to her at the top of the 18. With a few steps to find her footing, Naylor launched the ball to the right corner of the net for Chicago to take the 2-1 lead. Naylor's goal ended up becoming the game-winning goal for the Maroons.
Overall in the game, UChicago outshot Carnegie Mellon 11-3. The Tartans' goal was their only shot on goal.
