CLEVELAND — The University of Chicago volleyball team completed the Sunday sweep in the second UAA Round Robin of the season. The Maroons took down #6 Emory 3-1 before defeating Brandeis 3-0 to cap off the weekend.
In the opening match of the day, the Maroons took on #6 Emory in their third consecutive match against top-six opponents, and they were able to take down the Eagles for the team's third win over a top-eight opponent this season. After falling behind 9-8 early, UChicago rattled off 10 of the next 13 points to stretch out its lead to 18-12 in the opening set. The Eagles continued to battle back, but the Maroons held on 25-23 thanks to several Emory errors down the stretch.
The second set saw more of the same for UChicago as they took another 18-12 lead, but the Eagles responded with 10 of the next 12 points to help level the match at one. The third set was back and forth for the majority of the set, and with Emory leading 21-20,
Diya Mishra responded with four kills on the final seven points to take the set 25-23 for a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set featured another big lead for UChicago late with four set points, and after dropping the first three,
Adelee Kaiton capped off the victory with a big kill for the win.
Gabi Spellings was dominant at the net all day for the Maroons as she recorded nine total blocks and six solo blocks to shut down the potent Emory attack. Her nine blocks are the most by a UChicago player since
Diya Mishra against UW-Oshkosh in 2022.
In the second match of the day against Brandeis, the Maroons jumped out to a 10-3 advantage. Despite the Judges bouncing back to win 17 of the next 25 points to take a 20-18 lead, UChicago still had three set points to win the opening set. However, Brandeis saved all three set points before Mishra and Spellings put away back-to-back kills to win the set 26-24.
UChicago built big leads in both the second and third sets, and they held off the late comeback attempts by Brandeis to complete the sweep.
Diya Mishra led the team with 29 kills, and
Adelee Kaiton added a team-high 22 digs in the two match wins.
Ellie Maxwell also added 39 assists, and
Gabi Spellings tallied 12 blocks.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Maroons improve to 9-9 on the season and sit atop the UAA standings at 4-1 on the year. UChicago returns to action on Saturday, October 18, as they host Denison and North Park in the first of two UChicago Triangulars.
