CHICAGO — University of Chicago senior Diya Mishra and sophomore Gabi Spellings swept the University Athletic Association Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week honors, as announced by the association office on Monday afternoon.
Mishra had a dominant showing over the weekend, leading her team to another top-10 win over #6 Emory and a sweep over Brandeis. In the win over Emory, she recorded a game-high 14 kills with a .263 attacking percentage, and in the win over Brandeis, she tallied 15 kills on 30 total attacks.
Overall, for the weekend, the biological sciences major from Seattle, Washington tallied 29 kills with a .279 hitting percentage to lead the Maroons to the top of the UAA standings.
On the defensive side, Spellings was a menace at the net. In the Maroons' win over #6 Emory, she recorded nine total blocks and six solo blocks to stop the potent Emory attack. The nine blocks were the most by a UChicago player since 2022, when Mishra recorded nine against UW-Oshkosh.
The history, philosophy, and social studies of science and medicine major also tallied three more blocks in the three-set win over Brandeis. Overall on the weekend, the Austin, Texas native recorded 12 blocks and 10 kills to help the Maroons complete the weekend sweep.
The Player of the Week award is the second of the season and fourth of the career for Mishra. It is the first of the season and first of the career for Spellings.
This also marks the first time since September 14, 2015, that the Maroons have swept both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards for volleyball.
Mishra, Spellings, and the rest of the UChicago women's volleyball team will return to action on Saturday, October 18, as they return to their home floor to host Denison and North Park in the first of two UChicago Triangular weekends.
