CHICAGO, Ill. -- The 7th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to 11 games with a 5-1 victory over Illinois Tech on Monday night at the Stagg Grass Fields.
This year's edition of the Southside Showdown featured a pair of unbeaten teams who had combined to score 69 goals while allowing just 8 goals, but the UChicago attack was able to throw the first punch early in the contest.
In the 10th minute,
Indira Naylor dribbled right past the Illinois Tech defense, slipped a ball in toÂ
Kamiryn Braxton Grimes, and she found
Lucy Harrison-Caldwell, who buried the shot from six yards out to put the Maroons on top 1-0. Following the opening goal, both defenses made play after play to keep the opposing attacks off the board, and the game entered the half with a 1-0 advantage.
Illinois Tech had its best scoring chance of the game in the 50th minute when a long ball beat the UChicago back line and allowed the Scarlet Hawks to have a one-on-one with
Sophia Sasaki in goal, but
Gabriella Jensen came out of nowhere and slid to knock the ball away and preserve the shutout and lead for the Maroons.
The Maroons doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when
Mary Stuart Kerrigan lifted a cross into the six-yard box, and the Illinois Tech keeper collided with her center back to allow
Kaitlyn Gomez to bury the second goal of the game for UChicago.
When it looked like the contest would end with a 2-0 final score, both offenses had other ideas, with the two teams combining for three goals in a span of 108 seconds.
Avery Gallucci took advantage of a fortunate bounce in the 18-yard box and tapped home the goal in the 78th minute after the cross from
Mary Roberts bounced over the head of the Illinois Tech keeper, who was off her line. One minute later, Kelly Hitchcock slipped through the UChicago backline and found the goal to grab one back for the Scarlet Hawks. Then, in the following minute, the Maroons extended their lead back to 4-1 as
Kaitlyn Gomez put a free kick into the 18, finding the foot of
Indira Naylor, and Naylor's shot was deflected and floated over the goalie and into the net at the back post.
The final UChicago goal came in the 89th minute whenÂ
Greer Reineke's
corner kick rattled around in the box and found the foot of
Bella Ballard, who poked it past the Illinois Tech keeper for her first career goal.
Overall in the game, UChicago outshot Illinois Tech 17-7, and
Sophia Sasaki came up with three saves on the four shots on goal faced in the contest.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 10-0-1 on the season. The University of Chicago will return to action on Saturday, October 11, as it travels to Pittsburgh to take on #16 Carnegie Mellon in another UAA showdown.
