WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University of Chicago women's volleyball team opened the 2025 UAA Tournament on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Rochester before falling 3-0 to (RV) Carnegie Mellon in the semfinals.
The Maroons came out on top in their first match of the day, overcoming Rochester in a battle that went to four sets. UChicago quickly took control in the opening set, dominating 25-17, before the Yellowjackets rallied to take set two.
Two back-to-back kills from UChicago from
Thalita Marangon and
Olivia Ip opened up set three and put the Maroons back on track. Rochester came back to tie the game at nine, but a kill from
Caroline Sele gave all the momentum they needed for the rest of the game. UChicago then went on a 6-0 scoring run to close out set three, 25-17.
UChicago cruised to victory in set four, jumping out to an early 9-1 lead. The Maroons capitalized on the Yellowjackets attack errors to contain possession of the match. A final serve from Marangon and error on Rochester finished the final set 25-10.
The win in the opening round set up a match with (RV) Carnegie Mellon in the semifinals. The Maroons struggled to find a rhythm in their semifinal match. Recording a .062 hitting percentage, UChicago used their defense to anchor them, but it wasn't enough to get the win over the Tartans.
As Carnegie Mellon jumped out an early 16-9 lead a kill from
Diya Mishra cut the deficit to five, but another powerful swing from a Tartan helped them keep the momentum and winning the first two sets.
The Maroons held their own in the third set as back-to-back kills from
Gaby Miriki and Marangon brought Chicago to their highest score of the game at 17. A few points were traded between the two before a Tartan kill closed out the final set 25-19.
Diya Mishra was a bright spot offensively for the Maroons, recording a game-high 11 kills.
Adelee Kaiton added nine digs and five kills, while Marangon added four of her own.
With the opening rounds split, the Maroons move to 15-13 on the season. The team will wrap up its 2025 season on Sunday at 9:30 AM ET as UChicago takes on NYU in the 3rd-place match.
