Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The 3rd-ranked University of Chicago men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to #12 WashU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Maroons had the first scoring chance of the game in the 22nd minute when
Kai Walsh found the second ball on a corner kick, but his scissor kick went just wide of goal. Neither team had a shot in goal in the opening 45 minutes, and the two sides went into the half scoreless. The physicality continued in the second half with the two teams combining for just one shot on goal in the first 75 minutes of action.
In the 75th minute, the Maroons had the first shot on goal of the contest as
Max Weene ripped a free kick straight at the WashU keeper. Then, on the ensuing WashU possession, the Bears found the go-ahead goal when the rebound fell to the foot of their leading goal scorer, Ethan Wirtschafter, for the 1-0 lead.
UChicago had a couple chances down the stretch to find the equalizer, but in the end, they could not find the goal and fell 1-0.
With the loss, the Maroons end their season with a 12-3-5 record on the season.
