WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University of Chicago women's volleyball team came up short in the third-place match on Sunday morning with a five-set loss to New York University.
NYU jumped out to a quick 5-2 advantage, but the Maroons rattled off five straight points to retake the lead quickly in the opening set. From that point on, neither team built more than a two-point lead for the remainder oif the set, and the Maroons faced a set point, trailing 24-23. However, a big kill by
Caroline Sele and an ace a few points later by
Hillary Cheung helped seal the opening set at 27-25.
The Violets bounced back in the second half to take a 17-7 advantage, but UChicago came storming back with six kills and four aces over the next 16 points to level the score at 20. Then, the Maroons used another four-point serving run to set up three consecutive set points, but NYU responded by winning six of the final points of the set to take the second set 27-25.
The Maroons dominated the third set with a .185 hitting percentage, and the defense tallied four blocks to hold NYU to a -0.026 hitting percentage in the set. In the final two sets, the NYU offensive attack came alive, hitting .234 in those final two sets to come from behind for the win.
Adelee Kaiton recorded a team-high 17 kills and added 10 digs, and
Diya Mishra led the team with 20 digs while adding 16 kills.
Hillary Cheung and
Ellie Maxwell also added double-doubles for the Maroons with 27 assists and 11 digs for Cheung and 21 assists and 12 digs for Maxwell. UChicago also excelled defensively at the net as
Gaby Miriki,
Gabi Spellings, and
Caroline Sele all recorded five or more blocks in the loss.
With the loss, the Maroons end their season with a 15-14 record overall and a fourth-place finish in the UAA Tournament.
