ST. LOUIS -- The 7th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 draw in their regular season finale against the top-ranked WashU Bears on Saturday night.
The Maroons drew first blood in the top-10 showdown as
Kamiryn Braxton Grimes ripped a strike that rattled the crossbar in the fifth minute, and following the shot, the rebound found the hand of a WashU defender to set up a penalty kick opportunity for UChicago.
Mary Stuart Kerrigan wasted no time at the spot as the buried the penalty kick to put the Maroons on top.
In the 26th minute,
Sophia Sasaki came up with a big save on a strike by the Bears, but a foul on the Maroons in the box on the ensuing corner kick gave WashU a chance of their own at the spot to level the score. Sasaki said no once again, however, as she sprawled to her left and kept the ball out of the back of the net with a big save. Sasaki would finish the game with four saves in an outstanding defensive effort in goal for the senior keeper.
Kerrigan had a chance to double the lead in the 70th minute with a long-distance shot from outside the 18, but the WashU keeper made the diving save to keep the deficit at one.
In the 76th minute, WashU found the equalizer as the Bears whipped in a corner kick, and amidst several bodies in front of goal, the ball deflected into the net to level the score with the eventual final score of 1-1.
With the draw, the Maroons move to 12-2-3 on the season and 3-2-2 in conference play. The Maroons have done enough to earn an at-large berth into the 2025 NCAA Tournament, and they will wait to hear their name called during the selection show on Monday, November 10, at 10 AM CT.
