CHICAGO -- The #21 University of Chicago women's basketball team cruised to a 79-57 win over Albion in its first home game after the holiday break. Using a dominant inside presence with 52 points scored in the paint, the Maroons extend their win streak to three and now sit at 7-2 overall on the season.
UChicago seized control early and never trailed after the opening minutes, shooting 53.8 percent from the field while forcing 20 Albion turnovers that turned into 27 points. The Maroons found ways to capitalize on the Britons' mistakes and set the tone for the rest of the game. Â
The Maroons opened the game with a strong opening quarter behind efficient ball movement. The Maroons closed the first frame on a 14–6 run, after back-to-back three-pointers from freshman
Ruiqi Liu and
Karen Xin, to take a 23–15 advantage into the second.
The Maroons continued to build separation in the second. After a quiet first quarter,
Annabelle Spotts hit a jump shot and a tough and-one to extend the lead to 12. As the momentum began to flow on offense, UChicago's defense seemed to follow. A few plays after,
Chris Sanders jumped out to a pass at the defensive end and drove it all the way to the basket to give UChicago its biggest lead to that point in the game at 18. The Maroons entered the break with a 46–30 advantage.
Albion attempted to cut into the deficit early in the third, but UChicago answered with another surge. Back-to-back steals and layups by
Bri Simpson helped extend the margin to 19, and a three from Sanders capped a 10–3 run that pushed the lead past 20.
UChicago maintained its steadiness in the fourth, continuing to attack the basket and control the glass. A fast-break layup from Spotts and a corner three from Xin solidified the Maroons' dominance, Â allowing them to comfortably close out one of the final nonconference games with a win.
Five UChicago players finished in double figures, led by Sanders and Simpson, who each scored 12 points. Spotts,
Kasi Samuda, and Xin added 11 points apiece, while Samuda and
Caroline Workman each pulled down seven rebounds. Fueling them to the win, the Maroons finished with a 52–22 advantage in points in the paint and a 39–26 edge on the boards.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 7-2 overall on the season. UChicago will return to action on Saturday, January 3, as the Maroons travel to Wheaton to battle the Thunder in their final non-conference showdown of the season.
