MILLINGTON & MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Chicago baseball team continued its dominant start to the season, improving to 5-0 with a 6-3 victory over Spalding on Saturday, thanks to timely hitting and strong bullpen pitching. The Maroons stayed undefeated on Sunday, claiming an 11-6 win over SUNY Oneonta, highlighted by a seven-run sixth inning and a strong start from Russel Kwinter. However, despite a late-inning surge, the Maroons fell 12-9 to Rhodes College on Monday in a high-scoring battle, as they rallied with a four-run eighth inning, only for Rhodes to respond with a decisive three-run bottom half to secure the win, leaving Chicago at 6-2.
vs (RV) Spalding
UChicago wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs in the first inning to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher
Jackson Bailey kept Spalding in check, working 4.1 innings while allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out one and kept the Golden Eagles off balance before turning things over to the bullpen.
Spalding chipped away, scoring a run in the third and adding two more in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. However, UChicago's pitching depth came through, as
Kirk Waller and
John Butka combined for 3.2 scoreless innings, shutting down any further Spalding threats.
With the game knotted at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Maroons' offense delivered in the clutch.
The Maroons will face SUNY-Oneonta next on their trip through Tennessee.
vs SUNY- Oneonta
Both teams struggled to find offensive momentum in the early innings, as Kwinter held Oneonta scoreless through five innings, striking out five while allowing just three hits.
The Maroons finally broke through in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a series of defensive miscues and clutch hitting.
Jack Sharp delivered a two-run double, while
Braden Jirovec and
Nathan Bae added RBI singles. A sacrifice fly by
Jackson Slipock helped extend the rally, giving UChicago a 7-0 lead.
Oneonta fought back in the eighth inning, cutting the lead to 10-6 with a five-run surge. However, UChicago responded immediately, tacking on an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice from Bae.
The Maroons continue their early-season road trip, looking to extend their unbeaten streak with more non-conference action.
vs #24 Rhodes
After three scoreless innings, UChicago struck first in the fourth, plating three runs behind a double from
Nathan Bae, a sacrifice fly from
Michael Gladden, and a two-run single from
Richard Lu. However, Rhodes responded immediately, launching a three-run home run to take a 4-3 lead.
The Lynx extended their advantage in the fifth, scoring five runs—capitalizing on defensive miscues and a two-run double to push their lead to 9-3.
UChicago chipped away with two runs in the sixth, as
Erik Rindner drove in a pair with a single to cut the deficit to 9-5. The big push came in the eighth, where Gladden ripped a two-run double before scoring on a throwing error to pull the Maroons within one. B. Jirovec then singled to right, driving in a run to cut tie the game.
Just as UChicago evened the score, Rhodes responded in the bottom of the eighth, clearing the bases with a three-run double to restore a 12-9 lead. The Maroons were unable to rally in the ninth, as Rhodes retired the side seal the victory.
UChicago looks to regroup as it continues its non-conference schedule, aiming to bounce back.
