Baseball Opens Spring Trip with Weekend in Lexington

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team opens their 2025 spring trip with three games at the Transylvania Round Robin in Lexington, Kentucky. The Maroons will play one game against UW-Oshkosh before battling the hosts, Transylvania, for the final two games of the weekend.

(RV) UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO NOTES:

* The University of Chicago sits at 8-2 overall this season after sweeping the Franklin Grizzlies in their last doubleheader with wins of 16-11 and 19-2.
* The Maroons won their first six games of the season en route to an 8-2 start in 2025.
* Jack Sharp has paced the Maroon offense so far this year with a 1.006 OPS on 11 hits and 4 extra-base knocks.
* Braden Jirovec leads the team with 14 hits and 14 runs on the year, and he leads in batting average at 0.368.
* Erik Rindner is the only other eligible player hitting over .300 this season with a .314 batting average and a .469 on-base percentage through 10 games. He has 11 hits and 11 runs scored as well as 12 free passes to first base.
* Hayden Leiderman has been lights out on the mound this season for the Maroons with a 1.80 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP in his first three starts of the season. Leiderman is boasting a 7.50 K/BB ratio with just three runs allowed in three games.
* Ben Liebel has earned two wins in relief for UChicago this season. He has pitched 9.0 innings in his three relief appearances with a 1.00 ERA and a 0.56 WHIP with 15 strikeouts and a 0.143 opponent batting average.
* Charlie Hahn and Kason Pelz have joined Liebel to be lights out in the bullpen with no hits allowed, no runs allowed, and 11 strikeouts in a combined seven appearances.
* The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 19, as they travel to Florida for four more games on their Spring Trip. UChicago will play Hope and Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday before battling Carleton on Thursday and Coe on Friday

(RV) UW-OSHKOSH NOTES:

* UW-Oshkosh enters the weekend at 6-2 overall with wins in five straight games after a 4-0 week in the RussMatt Invitational in Orlando.
* The Titans have been one of the top fielding teams in the country this season with a 0.971 fielding percentage which ranks top-40 in DIII.
* UW-Oshkosh also ranks top-40 in both stolen bases per game at 3.00 and triples with 5 this season.
* Carter Stebane and Jake Surane have been dominant at the plate with a team-high 13 hits and 0.394 batting average this season.
* Stebane and Surane are also a combined 13-14 on stolen bases this season.
* Zach Taylor has also crushed the ball for the Titans as the lone OPS over 1.000 with a team-high 7 RBIs and 3 extra-base hits through the first eight games.
* On the mound, Connor Walters has been off the charts with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP through two starts. He has also struck out 18 batters in just 15.0 innings pitched en route to a 2-0 start to the season.
* Following the Transylvania Round Robin, the Titans will return to the road on Saturday, March 22 as they travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take on the Carthage Firebirds.

TRANSYLVANIA NOTES:

* Transylvania comes in at 6-4 on the season, but the Pioneers have won five straight games since their 1-4 start to the season.
* The Pioneers have outscored their opponents 55-17 in their last five games.
* Transylvania currently sits top-50 in NCAA DIII in ERA with just 3.92 earned runs allowed per game.
* Baxter Tedesco leads the team in both batting average (0.400) and on-base percentage (0.455).
* Henry Mitcham has been the top bat in the lineup with a team-high 16 hits and 5 extra-base hits to open the season.
* Ethan Dillon provides the power in the Transylvania lineup with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs in the first 10 games.
* Connor Arnold and Luke Patton have both been lights out on the mound with a 3-1 record, 20 strikeouts, and a combined ERA of 3.55.
* Following this weekend, the Pioneers will return to play the following weekend as they open HCAC play with doubleheaders against Bluffton and Manchester.

SERIES HISTORY:

* UChicago and Wisconsin-Oshkosh have only met two times all-time, splitting a doubleheader in Florida in 2014.
* The Maroons and the Pioneers have met on the diamond 11 times in history with UChicago holding a 6-5 series lead.
* UChicago won 2 of 3 in Lexington last season, but they have won just 2 of the last 6 meetings against Transylvania dating back to 2020.
