CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team split their second day of competition during their Florida spring trip on Monday with a 7-0 win over UW-La Crosse and an 8-6 loss to Amherst.

In the first game of the day, UChicago and UW-La Crosse opened with an old-fashioned pitching duel with neither team able to get on the board in the first four innings of the game and just five combined hits in the first five innings. The Maroons got on the board first in the fifth inning after Mia Bocian reached on an error and later scored on a RBI groundout by Paige Zvokel.

UChicago broke the game open in the sixth inning with three runs to extend the lead to 4-0. Sedona Ding manufactured her own run as she singled, stole second and then later scored on an throwing error by the Eagles. Audrey Hui and Zvokel continued the runs party with RBI singles in the inning as well. In the seventh inning, it was more of the same for UChicago as Matilda Nelson brought home a pair of runs on an RBI double, and Bocian added her first RBI of the game with a single to help the Maroons take the opener with a 7-0 victory. Paige Heffke earned her second win in as many ways as she pitched a complete game shutout with 8 strikeouts and just 6 hits allowed in the win.

In the second game, the Maroons jumped on the Mammoths quickly. After Amherst scored one in the top of the first, Audrey Hui and Matilda Nelson each singled home runs, and Kate Bannister added a big two-out, two-run single to stretch the lead to 4-1 in the first. Amherst got another run back in the second, but UChicago loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning and scored two runs on a pair of RBI groundouts by Paige Zvokel and Maya Martinez to stretch the lead to 6-2 after two innings of play.

The Amherst offense would come alive from that point forward as they scored five runs on five hits in the top of the third to take a 7-6 lead, and they would keep the Maroons off the bases and off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to hold on for the 8-6 victory.

Sedona Ding led the team with 4 hits, 3 runs scored, and 5 stolen bases in the two games. Madeline Murphy and Audrey Hui also added 3 runs and 3 hits, and Matilda Nelson added 3 hits and a team-high 3 RBIs on the day.

With the split, the Maroons move to 4-6 overall on the season. The team returns to action on Wednesday, March 19 as they take on UW-River Falls and Eastern Connecticut State at 9 AM ET and 11:30 AM ET.
