CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team completed their two-game sweep on Wednesday with wins over UW-River Falls and Eastern Connecticut State.
The UChicago bats were hot in the early morning Florida sun as the team exploded for three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-0 lead over the Falcons.
Natalie Antin and
Laila Sims each brought home runs with RBI singles in the first inning, and
Anna Jensen added the third with a sacrifice fly. In the second inning, it was more of the same for the Maroons with RBI hits by both
Audrey Hui and
Matilda Nelson as well as another sacrifice fly, this time by Antin.
Natalie Antin added her third RBI of the game in the fourth inning with an RBI singles to stretch the lead to 7-0. After a pair of fifth inning runs by the Falcons, the Maroons closed out the run-rule victory with four runs in the sixth on the fourth RBI of the game for Antin, a two-run double by
Laila Sims, and another RBI double by
Anna Jensen.
Paige Heffke locked down the UW-River Falls offense with 5 strikeouts and just 2 hits allowed in four innings for her fourth win of the season.
Nicole Wong closed out the final two innings of the game in relief.
In the second game of the day, Eastern Connecticut State took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Maroons offense responded with four straight runs over the next three innings to take a 4-1 lead.
Natalie Antin continued her game one success with a two-run double in the first and an RBI single in the third.
Audrey Hui also brought home a run on an RBI single.
After the Warriors cut the lead to 4-3, UChicago found an insurance run in the fifth on the second RBI single of the game by
Audrey Hui. The Maroons took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning, but Eastern Conecticut State was able to level the game and send it to extras.
In the eighth inning, the Warriors got a runner on third with just one out, but
Paige Heffke slammed the door shut with a strikeout and a pop out to give the Maroons a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. After
Laila Sims moved
Brianna Leech to third base on a sacrifice, Leech was able to beat out a play at the plate on a ground ball by
Anna Jensen to give the Maroons the 6-5 victory.
Natalie Antin led the Maroons with four hits and seven RBIs in the doubleheader.
Audrey Hui and
Laila Sims also added four hits and three RBIs for UChicago.
Matilda Nelson and
Madeline Murphy combined to reach base 11 of their 16 times at the plate during the two games, and Murphy was a menace on the base paths with 5 stolen bases. On the mound,
Paige Heffke earned both wins for the Maroons with 14 strikeouts in 12.0 innings with a 2.33 ERA on the day
With the wins, the Maroons improve to .500 for the first time this season at 6-6 overall. UChicago wraps up their 2025 spring trip on Thursday as they take on Macalester and Hamline.
