UChicago Honors Seniors with 65-55 Victory Over WashU on Senior Day

CHICAGO - On Senior Day, the University of Chicago women's basketball team celebrated their two seniors, Bella Alfaro and Sophia North, with a hard-fought 65-55 victory over Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. The win improves UChicago's record to 15-10 overall and 5-9 in UAA play, while WashU drops to 16-9 overall and 7-7 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started with both teams struggling offensively, with UChicago holding a narrow 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the Maroons came alive in the second, outscoring WashU 23-14 to take a commanding 34-24 lead at the half. Annabelle Spotts was instrumental in the Maroons' strong second-quarter performance, contributing seven points, and finishing the game with 21 points, leading all scorers. Spotts' shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, helped give UChicago the cushion they would need to secure the win.
  • WashU mounted a comeback in the third quarter, trimming the lead to 43-4. However, the Maroons held their ground and used a strong 22-point fourth-quarter performance to close out the game. In the final frame, UChicago was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting all six of their attempts, and controlled the pace to preserve their lead.
  • UChicago's seniors were central to the team's success. Sophia North, in her final home game, had 12 points and five rebounds. Bella Alfaro, who also played a key role, finished with six points and three assists. Both seniors were recognized during the pregame ceremonies, and their leadership on the court was evident in this important win.
  • Kasi Samuda added nine points and six rebounds, and Caroline Workman chipped in with three points and four rebounds in a strong defensive showing. UChicago's bench contributed significantly, with Annabelle Spotts leading the charge for the second unit, adding 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
  • This win not only marked a memorable Senior Day for UChicago's two seniors but also helped the the team close out the season on a high note.
