MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Chicago women's tennis team put together a commanding performance in the ITA National Indoor Championship, defeating Emory 5-2 on Saturday at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Maroons responded emphatically in singles play, winning five of six matches to secure the team victory.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Oliwia and Sylwia Mikos earned a strong 6-3 win, but Emory clinched the point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
The Maroons quickly flipped the momentum in singles action. Nicole Geller (No. 2), Erica Ekstrand (No. 3), Sarena Biria (No. 4), Isabelle Chong (No. 5), and Clara Zou (No. 6) all notched victories, with Ekstrand coming back to win in a third-set super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
At No. 1 singles, Sylwia Mikos pushed her match to the limit but fell 7-6, 6-3 in a competitive battle against Emily Kantrovitz.
With the win, UChicago improves to 8-1 on the season and advances to the ITA National Indoor Championship against West Coast Rival, No. 2 Claremont Mudd Scripps Sunday at 10:30 AM CST.
